The Historic Journey of Japanese Canadians

Presenter: Mary and Tosh Kitagawa (Local Residents and Redress Advocates)

Mary and Tosh Kitagawa will review the story of injustice toward people of Japanese descent within Canada, and within BC, in particular, through the twentieth century. They speak from personal and collective experience. Unjust laws were passed by both the BC and Federal Governments, resulting in systemic oppression and racial restrictions toward people of Japanese descent, whether immigrant or citizen. Together they joined the Japanese Canadian Citizens Association during the fight for redress in the mid 1980s.  Eventual redress and apology were won in 1988 from the Government of Canada.  For thirty years they have been speaking to students and adult groups of all levels about Japanese Canadian history.  Mary Kitagawa is a recipient of the Order of British Columbia for her efforts in this cause.
