The Suffering of Job: Confucian and Taoist Points of View

Presenter: Puqun Li, PhD(Kwantlen Polytechnical University)

The Book of Job is commonly read in Judaism and Christianity as tackling two interconnected questions about divine justice: Why do the innocent suffer?  Why does God permit wickedness on earth?  In this presentation, Dr. Li will explore The Book of Job from the perspectives of Confucius and of the Taoist Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu). According to their respective interpretations, there is only one question that the Book of Job tries to answer.  It is “How should any of us cope with hardship?” The question is, in essence, about how to understand suffering and how victims of suffering come to terms with it.

1 session: $10   Class size: max 24

Wednesday: April 12   1:00-3:00pm

Cedar Park Church, Ladner
