Family Day in British Columbia is observed on the third Monday of February. In [2025], BC Family Day will fall on Monday, February 17. It's a great day for families to spend quality time together.

Family Day in British Columbia was officially established in 2013. The holiday is observed on the third Monday of February each year, providing residents a chance to focus on family time and participate in community events.

The concept of Family Day originated in Alberta in 1990 by Premier Don Getty. He introduced the holiday to emphasize the importance of family values and counter what he saw as a decline in family cohesion in society.

Other provinces, including Saskatchewan, Ontario, New Brunswick, and BC, followed suit and established their versions of Family Day over the following decades. The date was chosen to match the U.S. Presidents' Day so as to avoid disrupting trade relations.

Presenter: Valerie Jerome (Olympian, Activist, Author and Advocate)

In the 1960s Harry Jerome set seven world records; including the 100-yard dash, earning him the title of the world's fastest man! His grandfather, John "Army" Howard, was Canada's first Black Olympian, competing in Stockholm in 1912 against nearly impossible odds. Harry's sister, Valerie, competed for Canada at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Valerie Jerome's book Races sets the record straight on her heroic family's history and the racism they fought along the way—from their community, the press, their country, and even inside their family home.  Races tracks Harry's life through his inimitable athletic career and into his work as an advocate for youth sport and education. Bringing readers inside the Jerome household,

Races reveals the hurdles they faced during the heavily segregated '60s and the long reach of racism that plagued their family history.

A tale of courage and conviction, Races is the difficult yet inspiring story of the Jerome family: what propelled them in life and on the track. You won’t want to miss this event in celebration of Black History Month.

To qualify for this Grade 2 iPad course, you must have already mastered these basic iPad skills: know how to access your iPad’s Settings, know your Apple ID, be able to access your iCloud and use the Apple Mail app (not the Gmail app). You also need to have pictures saved on your iPad. If you have these skills in hand, you’re ready to go Beyond Beginner!

This course will teach you how to get more out of your iPad. Skills include learning what to do with all those pictures you’ve been taking: editing, organizing, sharing, storing, as well as working with attachments.

We will expand on basic email skills, and you’ll learn how to stay organized using Apple Contacts, Calendar, Reminders and Notes. We’ll also go beyond basic internet searches and learn how to use your iPad as a source for news and learn how to create your own personal library.

If time permits, we will also learn how to use Maps for directions and even how to do some online comparison pricing and shopping. Be ready to learn strategies to find answers for yourself as you go beyond the basics.

Alice Munro (1931-2024) had her first short stories published in the 1950s. From then until 2012, she continued to practice this literary form.

These stories were translated into many languages and were compared to those of such writers as Anton Chekhov.  For them, Munro won Governor-General’s awards, Giller Prizes, the Mann Booker International Prize, and the Nobel Prize.

When Munro died, she and her works were celebrated. Shortly after, however, a daughter from her first marriage publicized the sexual abuse that she had suffered at the hands of her mother’s second husband, and how Munro had reacted in an insensitive way when she was informed.

This course will, first, analyze six stories from Munro’s collections published between 1968 and 2012; second, discuss relationships between an author and his/her fiction; and, third, question these relationships as they pertain to Alice Munro and who we think she is.

Louis Riel has been called the most controversial figure in Canadian history. He is considered a hero and a “martyr” by many since he dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of his Métis people.

However, he was hanged in 1885 for treason. Some still think of him as a traitor. A further complication is that his trial was founded on a plea of insanity.

Was he “insane”? Riel spent time in more than one mental institution during his life. Despite all this, Riel has since been declared the honorary first premier of Manitoba and has been called a Father of Confederation by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Visionary, martyr, or “madman”? Come and join us for the discussion to follow.

In response to the high cost and continuing demand for housing, which is harming an ever-growing number of people, our provincial government is pushing local municipalities for an increase in housing builds. As we see this push for more housing taking shape, many in the community are concerned about the form that new housing will take. This two-part series will examine the current housing crisis and will present a strategy for gradual neighbourhood change, that will retain neighbourhood values while building a pathway out of this crisis.

Strong Towns is a nonprofit North America wide organization that promotes the development of cities and neighborhoods of all sizes to be safe, livable, inviting and resilient. They analyze the failures of the post-war North American development pattern while giving citizens the knowledge and tools to start making communities better.

Join us for an interesting take on not only how we got to the current crisis but how it is possible to build communities that are financially stable, vibrant and enduring.

“Memoir” is from the French “memoire”, a factual non-fiction narrative of the author’s personal memories. A memoir often tells the story of a particular event or time, such as a touchstone moment or turning point in life.

In this class, we will look at ways to chronicle your life using your meaningful moments.  You will write stories about your life while keeping in mind that writing is deep thinking. You will surprise yourself!

When you come to class, please bring a memory that has significance for you. Also please bring some paper and pen or an electronic device to record your writing. We will be sharing our writing so also be prepared to accept that what we hear in class, stays in class. Confidentiality is key. Elder Margaretta James is a visiting scholar at St John’s College, UBC and speaks to the social, historical, political and economic importance of Yuquot, also known as Friendly Cove, on the northwest coast of Vancouver Island.
Learn how in the eighteenth century this trade route was a source of early contact between first peoples, Europeans and others.

You will also learn about the “Whalers’ Shrine”,  which stood in the forest for more than a millennium before being surreptitiously taken in 1904 for the American Museum of Natural History.

In 1923 Parks Canada recognized it as a national historic site, as a unique ceremonial structure, and the most significant monument to a purification ritual on the west coast.  Repatriating this sacred shrine to its home is not just a matter of cultural heritage and respect for the ancestors, it is part of a path of healing for the wounds of the past.

We are closed Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Easter is a significant holiday in Western culture, symbolizing the Christian belief of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Celebrated on a Sunday, it marks the culmination of the Passion of Christ, preceded by Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and penance. Churches adorn themselves with white lilies, and services often include special hymns and the ringing of church bells.

Easter has also woven itself into various cultural traditions.

The Easter Bunny, originating from German folklore, is a beloved character that delivers eggs, a symbol of new life, to children. Families participate in colorful egg hunts, and it’s a time for gathering and enjoying festive meals. In many Western countries, Easter parades, complete with bonnets and floral dresses, add a joyful communal aspect to the celebration.

Overall, Easter blends religious observance with cultural customs, making it a diverse and meaningful holiday.
