About a decade ago, we entered the age of the Digital Dead. Deathbots, or Griefbots, are reshaping how we grieve and relate to the deceased. Yet death has long intersected with technology—photographs, recordings, telegraphs—each preserving fragments of presence. Today, amid promises of approaching singularity and general AI, our data and that of our loved ones—living and lost—fuel this generative explosion. It’s not hyperbole to say AI is the manifestation of humanity haunting itself. Nor to say these digital ghosts are owned and governed by tech corporations. In this talk, Dr. Fellows explores what this might mean for grief, loss, and our evolving sense of self.

Eric Jamieson, winner of the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal for his book Arctic Patrol, uncovers the fascinating history of Canada’s fight to secure its Arctic territories.  Come hear the story of how in the 1920’s, Canada’s claim to the Arctic’s archipelago was touch and go and how it was secured by a 1,800-mile dogsled patrol by two RCMP officers and an Inuit guide. As Canada today fends off threats to Arctic sovereignty, we should know the political history of the region and how important it is.

We’ll start with a brief history of the development of submarines from the first iterations to the present day, and the employment of these vessels, often called “U-boats”, as tactical and strategic weapons of war in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.  Then we’ll move into  Canada’s need for submarines to protect our sovereignty and defend the shores of our three oceans, the sad state of our current submarine fleet and the choices we face.  Can we upgrade our undersea capabilities satisfactorily without going nuclear?
