After the English Civil War, thinkers in Europe developed theories about power, monarchy and the best way to govern. These ideas permeated the development of the constitutional monarchy in England and the revolutions in America and France. This five-session course will explore the most significant ideas and actions that contributed to the demise of absolute monarchy and the ascent of citizens’ power. Participants are expected to pre-read assignments, share their findings and participate in class discussions.
