Ice War Diplomat, An Insider’s Account of the Canada-USSR Summit Hockey Series

Presenter:  Gary J Smith, Author and former Canadian Ambassador

Gary J Smith's book Ice War Diplomat, is an insider’s account of the Canada-USSR Summit Hockey Series of the century played during the Cold War in 1972. 

At age 28 yrs his first diplomatic assignment was at the Canadian Embassy in Moscow where he stick-handled international relations, political and player tensions and disagreements not to mention the flood of Canadian and Russian hockey fans.  The last game was reportedly viewed by 150 million fans in the USSR and 16 million in Canada.

This is a Zoom Hybrid class.  Ambassador Gary Smith will present from Perth, Ontario and our own hockey legend, Coach “Boots” Boutilier, will host in-person at the Learning Centre.   “Boots” is the former owner/director of Vancouver Junior Giants Spring Hockey Program, an Instructor at the Vancouver Giants Hockey Camp and current Director of Hockey and Head Coach for the South Delta Minor Hockey Association.
